New customer - not a switcher

I've been renting privately for a couple of years since selling the family pile and being divorced.
Now I'm buying a house and want the best deal.
I don't know which suppliers the current owner uses, but I want the best deal as a new customer. Assuming she shuts down her account etc I should be starting from scratch, yes?
Comparison sites ask who the current supplier is to compare to, but as I don't know, I insert British Gas.
As I'm a new girl, do I get the same deal as all those disloyal (!) switchers, or am I regarded as a switcher too?
I guess this applies to phones and water and stuff too...

And am I the only person who find these pages have too much info on them to ever be able to see what button I need?
Blimey, I'd love to see inside Martin's brain - must be like a Swiss watch!0 -
Suppliers supply the house, not the customer, so when you move in your supplier will be whoever supplied the previous tenants. You can then choose who you like - you'll be a switcher.
Take readings when you move in and keep them safe, just in case.0 -
Hello,
any help gratefully appreciated as Im not over here often!!
I am moving at the end of the week to a new house. We are having to estimate our new bills (obviously!) but I dont really know how to go about changing! Do we contact our new suppliers in advance? I want to go through switching or cashback sites - is it best to do this on the day (Friday!) or now?
Any advice would be gratefully received... thanks xxxDFW Nerd #1310 -

Can you ask the current owner who the suppliers are.
That way you could insert the correct supplier in comparison site and get a better idea on the best deal?'Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle'0 -

Am sure you can find out who the best suppliers are using comparison sites, find the best one for you and apply online.
There will possibly be a section on application where you can state when you want the supply to start from. You will probaly have to provide meter readings so that you only pay for supply from when you move in.
Am sorry if this not helpful.
Good luck'Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle'0 -

They just need to use the maps on Energylinx and their contact details for the Distributor for their region. They will tell them who there Supplier is.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -

Hi,
It will work like this for you.
You contact your current Supplier telling them you are moving out. Give them a reading and they will send you a final bill.
When you move into your new property you will have a current Supplier since utilities supply the property, not the customer hence they can leave the power on when occupants move in and out.
So, you also contact your new homes Supplier, give them a reading and they will set you an account up. Then you can switch. Switching takes approx 4-6 weeks but you will be given a handover date that is far sooner than this. You give the new Supplier a handover reading and they inform your old Supplier.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -
Hi, I'm returning to the UK after being abroad for 20years, so that's when I had my last utility supplier. I've bought a house six months ago which is lying empty awaiting our return. I know the past owners utility suppliers and have the final meter readings, but I most likely need the supply to be on when we arrive back. Can I take the advantages of going through the cashback sites to switch to a change of supplier? What I don't want is to go through the old suppliers first to hook up then switch to a new supplier. I'd like to go directly onto the new supplier but will that take time, and if so how long? Can I also take advantage of the cashback sites for phone and internet connections as I will be a new customers? I do know the old owners internet suppliers. Thanks in anticipation.0

Unless you have PP meters or have capped your pipes the energy will be there for you to use. As a switch takes 4 to 6 weeks you must make sure you give the current suppliers a reading and get an account in your name. You just need to go on the standard tariff so you are not stuck with the company you can then choose what supplier you want.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0

I would first like to point out to others this thread is almost 2 years old.
In respect of the recent post asking about a new supplier, register with the existing suppliers & then switch. It'll take at least 4 weeks to switch and the existing supplier will want to bill you for any consumption during that period.
