WiFi signal problems

I connect to the Net from my HP laptop through a Netgear wireless router situated upstairs from my laptop. The signal keeps varying between 8Mbps and 54Mbps. To try and resolve it I connnected a Netgear Wireless USB adaptor to the laptop. This improved the signals for couple of months - but now I'm back to the problem outlined above. I use Win XP to connect through. I've tried doing "ping" tests and am also getting some time outs. Checked with my ISP and they say no problems and signal is also fine from my desktop. Any ideas? Thanks.

have you tried angling the aerial or changing channel 1 6 or 11
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • My ISP installation CD mentions something about changing the channel. I have been having problems with my WiFi signal too. How would I go about doing this?
  • For a Netgear router, with your web browser logon via http://192.168.0.1 assuming defaults of:

    user: admin
    password: password

Go wireless settings and then select channel to change it
    Click save

It may also be worthwhile updating your wireless chipset/card driver.

You could also try making your own parabolic reflector which can be fun and actually works too.
