Smelly wheat micro bag.. help please

I reuse the same batch of pearl barley over and over again. But i don't put in sealed bag, as such.
I have a long-ish cotton bag..about 9 x 5 inches, with the open end at one (shorter) end of this bag. It's not sewn up.
I just roll up the bag to enclose the barley and then pop in the micro. Then i just keep it rolled up whist i'm using it...sort of a rolled up sausage shape, i spose. I don't want to sew this bag up just yet, as i'm experimenting to see how long the pearl barley lasts..i've been on the current batch now, for about one month, with the bag being use at least once per day.
Obviously, if the bag is for a child, then it would have to be sew up to seal it!
hope this makes sense.0 -
The one I got for christmas says to heat it up with a mug of water in the microwave too. I've had them before and it's never said that. I find it doesn't heat up very well with the water in there - if I give it the minute and a half it states it is only luke warm. It sounds like you might have over heated it if it's smelling like that. I had one that I over heated and nothing I did helped. I wasn't OS back then so I just bought another one i'm ashamed to say! Hope you get yours sorted.0

Thankyou so much. I get what you mean nowWell its for me to use but i have to wrap it around my ankle. So i had better sew it up. The metalwork in my leg is all around my ankle and lower leg ( I could do with a heatable boot)
Mudbath I think thats what i have done. It says heat for 2 minutes which i did. Suppose my microwave was too powerful for 2 mins ? Prior to this i had only heated for 1.5 minutes But was fed up keep having to reheat so oftenfurrypig says:my name is Choccy and I am addicted to nose free stamps as I want to save them all and give them noses!!!:rotfl:

Has anyone tried this ?
The reason you are asked to put a cup of water in the microwave is so that it creates some steam/moisture and the bags don't catch fire. Remember, each time you reheat them, you are drying out whatever you have used for the filling. I don't put a cup of water in the microwave when I heat mine, but I do spritz the bag first with a couple of squirts of a mixture of water and essential oil - I don't want the bag wet, just literally adding some moisture and freshening up the scent.
If you are going to make your own, do consider making the bag from a cheap plain cotton (calico? Muslin?) and then use your pretty material to make a cover for it, like a pillowcase. Over time, the bags can discolour and to have to unpick the bag and empty out the rice is a lot of effort to go to to wash it; having a pillowcase style cover is a lot easier to wash
Have fun making your bag c.o. but if in the meantime you need something like it, if you have a cotton sock, fill that with some rice, tie a knot in the top and heat that up and wrap it round your ankle. (Or an old long sleeved cotton shirt that is no longer any use - chop the arm off and simply tie a knot one end, fill with some rice and knot the other end closed).~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Queenie Thanks so much
What a great idea about using a sock. I hadnt thought of that at all. Living in a house that has a 'washing machine sock monster', I am sure i will be able to hunt out an odd sock or 3
Right i have my task for the day. I have plenty of rice here. So thats what i am doing today. Then i will try one of the others at the weekend. I have some muslin squares at the bottom of my tablecloth box. It will be great to put them to use.
Thanks also for clearing up the water to stop them catching fire, i hadnt thought of that. I have a linen and room spray here ( From Avon 3 for £3) So i can use that or at least the bottle when its finished.
Thankyou againfurrypig says:my name is Choccy and I am addicted to nose free stamps as I want to save them all and give them noses!!!:rotfl:
