Smelly wheat micro bag.. help please

I wonder if any clever OSers could help ?
I have a microwave wheat bag that you hot up to put on aches and pains.
Well the one i have is a citrus and eucalyptus one. Now everytime it goes into the microwave it smells horrible. Such a sickly putrid smell that lingers.

Can i replace the contents with anything to stop the horrible smell ? I have tried spraying lots of smellies on it but it just hasnt made a difference:confused:

The wheat bag really helps the pins and plates that are in my lower leg,it aches so much with this cold weather. Lakeland where i got it from do not have any left. So i wondered if i could change the innerds ;)

Any help would really be appreciated

It seems likely that the smell has infused the bag itself by now, so you might consider just starting from fresh.
Any grain can be used in a simple cloth bag - wheat or millet are popular choices - and a few drops of your favourite essential oil (lavender is very soothing and lavandin is similar but is more often suggested for muscular aches and arthritis. Rosemary is also good for aching muscles).

Wheat and millet available from wholefood shops, some supermarkets, etc. I've not tried rice myself but I've heard that it's fine - as I say, any whole grain will do.
I was told to put an eggcupful of water in teh microwave when heating the bag, but not sure if this is correct as not all instructions mention it.
  • Thanks again Seakay. I will ask my friend to pick me some up at the weekend.

I might make 2 one from wheat or millet and another of rice.At least i will have a spare one then.

Right off to find some cotton. I might try and take the contents out of the bag i have here and give it a wash. ( Its a really pretty pink and purple one)

I made my first rice bag a couple of months ago and it worked really well....
...for about a month...then started to smell a bit!

I now use pearl barley instead of rice..so far, so good.

Oooh right. Might give pearl barley ago then since you have tried with that.

Do you just heat it in the microwave or put it in with a cup of water as Seakay had seen ?

i just put a couple of handfuls of the pearl barley in a cotton bag, and then put it on high micro setting for 2 - 2.5 minutes.
  • Sorry for being a pain

So you dont re use it ? Its not sealed into the bag ?

The one i had here was one that you could put in the microwave time after time. Maybe why it is all smelly/ burnt
