P60s

Options
This is a somewhat random question that doesn't fit into any of the forums properly, but is probably more closely related to benefits. After spending the morning chasing around various government websites and emailing them, I now want a straight answer and figured this will be the best place.

Okay, background: I was employed until January 2006, when I left my supermarket job because of illness. I did not start claiming benefits until July or August 2006, as I was naive enough to think my depression and anxiety could be cured by a few months of rest whilst I lived on my savings and had 6 weeks of NHS counselling.

The main question: should I have received a P60 in April 2006?

I'm pretty sure I didn't, as I'm careful not to throw away important financial stuff and have the previous 2 P60s, but I can't be certain. I do have a P45 from my employer, given to me in Jan/Feb 2006 (I left at the end of the month).

I need this documentation because I'm starting university in October and want to apply as an independent student, since my parents aren't prepared to contribute, and need to prove that I've supported myself for at least 3 years because I'm under 25 (just - I'll be 24 in May).

The secondary question: one of the email replies I got from a government department that could not give me a straight answer (go figure), says I should have received P60s whilst I've been on benefit. Again, I'm sure I haven't received one for 2007. Should I have been sent one?

The information I've found in regards to qualifying for student financial help says I can contact the Job Centre for proof that I've been claiming benefits, so I sense this is not such a problem.

If I was supposed to be sent the P60s, is there any way I can get copies? If so, who do I contact?

Thank you for your help,

Leigh

You would only get a P60 if you had an employer on 5/4/06.

If you were claiming taxable Incapacity Benefit on 5/4/07, JCP should have sent you to you in May 07- contact your JCP Benefit Centre to ask. A duplicate, in the form of a letter, can be issued by JCP if need be.
  • Thank you so much! After wasting all that time this morning trying to find out, I am extremely grateful. :T
