When to get a Solicitor involved?

Hi all,

I am a FTB and confused about when to get a solicitor involved.
Am i right in getting the property valuation/survery done before getting a solicitor or one must have solicitor in place once offer is accepted?

    Get a solicitor on board as soon as possible, that way you can start the ball rolling with a phone call at any time and you can ask any questons that come to mind/discuiss the buying process with them before you make an offer. They won't do any work, and cost you any money, until you instruct them in respect of a property.
  • Agreed. Line your solicitor up as you'll need to supply ID and sign an appointment letter before they can undertake any work. I would want to have my solicitor in place before making an offer, so would be appointing them once I start to make viewings.
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)

    Was wondering all solicitors ask for advance payment even before the valuation/survey is done. If something drastic comes up in survey i will loose both solicitor and survey fee. So, what to do??

    If you pull out of a purchase for whatever reason, as I have done in the past, you will be responsible for fees for any time the solicitor has spent so far plus any disbursements (searches etc.). Your survey fee will also be lost.
