cooker extractors

can anyone shed some light on cooker extractors?

we are in the process of doing our kitchen and at the moment do not have one at all!

my question is - we live in a terraced house so are the ones that use filters okay or should we try to tunnel a pipe along the kitchen to outside?

i also like the diagnol extractors instead of the traditional chimney hoods but they are quite a bit more expensive! APART FROM LOOKING NICE ARE THEY WORTH IT?

thanks

All your questions are really up to yourself, but I can give you my opinion?

The recirc option on cooker hoods with the filter is not very effective IMO. "Some" of the smell will be removed by the inbuilt carbon filters and "some" of the smoke and grease will be removed by the internal filters. However they are not very efficient and generally don't perform well at all.

Ideally you need to route the extractor outside, thus everything it sucks up goes outside and isn't just passing through a couple of lets face it, not very good, filters!

Finally, your choice of hood is up to you, fancy looking ones are in the main just that and not much else. Whatever design you choose, check the flow rates of the hood in the specifications and this will tell you how much air is sucked up, obviously the most air flow sucks up and exchanges the most air, hence performs better.

If you are going for a hood to vent outside, check that you will not upset the air supply to any gas burning appliances in the kitchen.
