Is a network using wireless & wires possible?

Let me explain that a bit clearer...

My laptop has recentlly become wireless enabled, I am connected to the internet via the Netgear WGT624v3 108 Mbps Wireless Firewall Router. Anything else such as th desktop PC, xbox etc accesses the internet via ethernet & this router. I want to be able to share files between the laptop & the desktop PC, is this possible with the current configuration & if so how?

All the information I can find is either for wireless networks or wired networks, not one using both via a router.

I'm fairly computer literate but know very little on networks so not too much jargon please.

Any help would be really appreciated.

  • Yes it is possible with your router, there is a sticky thread above on the subject, alternatively google "file and print sharing", there are many guides to it on the web, just make sure your router is encrypted, otherwise you may end up sharing your files with the neighbours.

yeah no problems as albertross has advised. I have the same router and use it for similar stuff.

4 ports on the back for wired connections and 250+ wireless connections available.

Nice piece of kit - I've had no probs with mine at all. The older model I had was downgraded to my parents house and its still going strong.

These were both e-bay refurbs as well.

You can have an config you like with the router, i have 1 wired x-box, 1 wireless x-box and 2 wireless pcs and 1 wireless laptop. I share files between pcs and music between laptop and x-boxes. If your wireless on your laptop you have nothing to do but search for your network and put in the acess key and your away pretty much.
  • I shall have to go look at the sticky & get a googling then & try to rack a couple of brain cells round it.

    Thanks all

Yes, as others have posted, it is possible - my network setup (using a Linksys router) has two PC's connected via Ethernet cables, and an Apple Mac and a Windows laptop connected wirelessly and it all works well.
(and I still have two Ethernet ports spare!)
