Renovating parquet flooring - advice anyone?

The parquet flooring in our hall has been covered in carpet for many years and now we would like to restore it. Some of the tiles (not many) are loose, there are a few paint splashes on it - it really could do with sanding and sealing. I have had a quote for the above work which made me feel like fainting (its not a huge hall), so is it possible for us to do it ourselves?
And how do we go about it? All advice gratefully received!

DId it in my parent's place and it came up a treat!
This too had been covered by carpet for a number of years, but was dull adn lifeless when the carpet was lifted.
Got a sander (orbital) from a hire shop, and some fine sandpaper. The job took approx 2hrs as we also got the 'iron' shaped snader to get in the edges. After that, (and a few breaks) we got the polish / marine wax on and now it looks brill - like a new expensive floor, but actually around 60yrs old!
Hurrah!
You can do it yourself if you are prepared to put the graft in .....
Hope that helps,
