Can anyone recommend a decent hotel in H.K during March, preferably on the island. I don't have a great deal of money to spend so maybe one that is doing a deal at the moment

If you want cheap and clean the Ibis North Point, Tiny rooms but clean and quiet, no swimming pool. North Point is a residential area. The Ibis looks over the bus station and ferry pier, we were on the 28th floor and had a fantastic harbour view.
An airport bus gets you to the hotel for HK$14'ish, Trams stop about 5 minutes walk away and get you into more touristy areas for HK$2 or the North Point metro stop is about 2 minutes walk from the hotel.
Not the prettiest area to stay but real and safe. We got the best price by booking direct through the Ibis website.0 -

We stayed here:

It's in Kowloon but only a couple of minutes walk to the Metro. It is an "older" style of hotel, BUT fully modernised, which means that the rooms are a good size, not like the rabbit hutches you get in many hotels now.0
