Kia Picanto - thumping noises!! help plz

My 22 month old Kia Picanto automatic (around 9000 miles on the clock) has started making odd thumping noises from the rear left when I put the brakes on.
It's most noticeable when I first start the car, then seems to wear off after a while.
I spoke to a dealer in Surrey (apparently my closest service centre from London!!) and he said it sounds as if the pad has got wet and rusted onto the disc.
Please could anyone with car knowledge help me out here? I don't want to get ripped off and have them change all my pads and whatnot if it's not necessary.
Question 1: What do you think the problem is?
Question 2: What sort of charge am I looking at or could it be covered but the 3 year warrantee?
Thanks in advance for any advice

What part of London? There is a Kia dealership in Beckenham, on the Chinese roundabout.

I dont know about cars but it depends what the problem is as to whether the warranty covers it. If its general wear and tear, I dont think it does.
  • SW15. I got it serviced in November near Tooting Bec, but that place isn't doing Kias anymore and Ewell is my closest (I rang Kia and checked their website).

It probably is wear and tear but I'm so clueless about cars I bet they try and fleece me so any input beforehand is gratefully received.

Do you only get this after its been raining (maybe difficult to answer with current weather) & the car has been stood for a while? It does sound like the brakes are binding due to the build of rust on the disc. Rust on the disc is quite normal, take a look along any street after heavy rain & you will see the brake discs on cars have very mild rust on them.

The usual cure is to drive slowly, prodding the brakes quite hard to remove the built up layer of rust. (Make sure you do this in a safe place & manner.) You may hear a slight grinding noise when first applying the brakes, this is normal.

I get this on my car if its been stood for a couple of days in the rain.

If the above doesn't cure your problem, get the garage to check the brakes out.
  • I am guessing that you car has drum brakes on the rear?
I would think that the slave cylinder could possibly be sticking or the shoes contaminated.

Shouldn't be too expensive to repair. I dont think friction material will be covered by the warranty though

  • Wow. Thanks for such specific advice! :T

I will find out if it has drum brakes and will mention the slave cylinder and shoes to the garage. (Also going to google them so I know what the heck they are!)

I only drive the car maybe twice a month or on long journeys to visit rellies. It's parked off the road outside so always in the weather.

Would using a car cover help to keep the brakes dry? (sorry if I'm showing my ignorance) If they get wet when I'm driving, then can I help prevent rust in any way - some sort of maintainence I could do?
  • If the car is left parked with the handbrake on for long periods this would contribute to them sticking.
When you have them repaired the garage should apply copper grease to the moving parts to prevent it happening again.
I have just repaired my car for a knocking noise similar to what you are describing.
I was convinced it was the brakes but it turned out to be a collapsed wheel bearing. You should ask them to check that too.

If the car is left for long periods of time, it may be worth chocking the wheels and leaving the handbrake off entirley. A car cover would help, but you need to get a really good one that is gone to cover the car & not flap around, allowing rain to get under the car.

Warranty prob not cover brakes. Try and get local garage to diagnose and if it does happen to be a warranty problem then you will have to go to dealership. If car is wet and you cover it or put it in garage, its not a good thing really to do for rust problems can arise.

Shame you can't use it a bit more - i don't do much mileage in my car and does more harm than good sometimes!:D

Not sure thumping noise is brakes... need someone to have a listen.

  • Thanks jeannieblue, Jorgan and thehood!

I feel so much better now that I have a few ideas about the problem and I'll be able to talk sensibly to the mechanic.

    :T :T

If the problem is brake rust then I'll ask about chocking it and leaving the handbrake off, also about copper grease.

I deliberately try not to use the car, it's cheaper to walk or take the bus but now I think I should make a point of it.
  • firstly, dont chock it and leave the handbrake off, what if someone removes the chocks? you will be to blame for any damage your runaway car does.
just leave the handbrake off and put it into 1st gear when the engine is switched off, then the brake shoes will not sieze on.
