Recording the Phone

Options
Does anyone here record their landline conversations and what do you use? I think it may be wise to now do this with all conversations to ensure accuracy (I sometimes mishear messages, name spellings etc) and also to ensure that when companies lie etc I have a clear recall of what they said previously. I already know the legalities about recording for personal use (so I don't need that kind of advice :D ) I just wondered on the practicalities and equipment. We currently have a cordless DECT phone system and another phone that's corded and would like to record any conversation as it happens on any of the phones.

For my interest could you explain the legalities for me.

You can legally record a conversation you are part of with or without permission of the other parties and with or without their knowledge for your own personal use, as long as the recording isn't divulged to a third party. E.g. http://www.retellrecorders.co.uk/legal/home.htm. But for now I can simply inform anyone on the phone the conversation is being recorded. I just want to know if anyone's got practical experience of this.

I have been recording "official" phone-calls for two months now. I record directly onto the PC.

    So what do you use?

I record onto a old mini disc recorder using Telephone to Tape Recorder Adaptor £9.99 from Maplins.

    It works well.

You know when you get the pre recorded message "this may be recorded for training purpose....." well I just say that I will too, but I don't think anyone will here it but that is not my fault and it is recorded that both parties have agreed to recording the call.

That's the kind of thing I was wondering if anyone had experience of (now that I remember this thread).

As i've stated many a time, it wouldn't stand up in a court purely because the other party you're calling can't agree to a call being recorded until you get to an advisor to declare.

In their case they advise you & that point you have the control of terminating the call should you not be happy with them recording it.

You are not giving them an opportunity to either carry on with the call or terminate it due to you recording it.

My recorder is always connected to the phone, when someone calls I check the Caller display and if it is not a number I know I flip one switch and it records. After the call I dial 1471 and aslo record the number that called with date and time.

I can then store any recordings to computer/CD/DVD if I want to.

If its recorded how would anyone/court now if there was no one listening?

They spoke to me I agreed we could record, so both have now agreed.

And they can always replay their recording to confirm I said I would.

And if they do not record that part how will they prove they told me?

But this thread isn't about taking the recordings themselves to court. You don't even have to tell the other party you're recording them if the recording is for yourself for your own info or for transcribing.

Easy to prove unfortunately for you, its a call platform stating the message, all computer powered, not connected to any phones. Also easy to prove.

Thats all good. I just hope for your sake one day you don't take it any further than just your own curiosity, because it'll struggle to stand up in court. Just if you ever feel as though it'll go further, declare as best you can ;)

Thats fine, i've no problems with that. I'm just highlighting the possible scenarios should someone wish to use the information against a company in the long run. All relevant information :)

OK I will take your point and in future will inform a real person that we agreed to recording this conversation.
