Having read (with envy) all the messages about using a slow cooker, I have finally bought myself one! I got it from a car boot sale for £2! It works fine but doesn't have an instruction book and while the 'High' 'Low' button is self explanatory, I don't know what the 'Auto' button does. It is a Russell Hobbs make if that makes any difference.
Can someone please enlighten me?
Thanks in advance x

AFAIK, the auto button cooks things on high until it reaches a certain temperature then switches itself to low for the rest of the time. I don't have an auto button on any of mine but find that if I start cooking early enough, I can cook on low, but if I start later then I use high for at least past of the time. It will depend on your cooker, how well/fast it cooks. The older ones have a lower wattage so do cook slower than the newer models.
So, simple instructions - start on a day when you will be around. Put your chosen meal in to cook on low and leave it at least 6 hours then check. remember that every time you remove the lid, it will add 10 mins to the cooking time as valuable heat is lost. It may need up to 8 hours cooking time. Remember also that root veggies take longer to cook than meat so you may want to parboil them, having cut them small. You can brown any meat if you want. It's going to be a case of trial and error for the first few times until you get used to it.

Yeah, my book say "Auto" is "High" until the correct cooking temperature is reached and then it switches to "Low".
If you can find an address for Russel Hobbs it might be worth writing to them to ask for a replacement instruction book.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there.
