You don't HAVE to be on the electoral role, so I doubt it would make a blind bit of difference. Voting is optional in this country...
It just depends on whether you want to vote in local elections or not!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
""You don't HAVE to be on the electoral role""
it is a legal requirement and an offence not to complete the electoral role form which is sent to you each year - you may opt for the "secrecy" role which means your name is hidden from advertisers who buy the role. Councils employ staff every year to chase up folks who have not registered.
You can choose to not vote.0 -
ohps, I guess I was living illegally for a few years then. That's what happens when you live in 17 different properties in 10 different cities/towns over 10 years!
My mistake! I am finally settled and on the electoral role now though! (although never got chased in 10 years!)Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

You need to be on the electoral role for credit searches by the lender. This could affect your score. Normally if you are not registered the lender will ask for a utility bill.0

When I applied for my mortgage the lovely man from the abbey did all his checks whilst I was filling a few forms. He suddenly said "why aren't you on the electoral role?" I was living with my mum at the time and had been on the role at other addresses whilst I was at Uni etc. However, the system didn't show me as registered at these addresses either or in the past despite me voting!
Anyway, to cut a long story short, the Abbey man said its not a problem, but I did need to show a years bank statements showing my current address.
It shouldn't be a problem.0 -
it used to be the case that you could only register your name to go onto the Electoral Role each october - so it made it hard for folks who moved a lot - now you can do it anytime.0

Someone who is dodging the voters register might very well have something to hide..... or something to hide from... like the bailiffs! thats why it affacts your credit rating.Mortgage debt - [STRIKE]£8,811.47 [/STRIKE] Paid off!0

Hi keyboard
I have heard that it is possible it may affect your credit scoring.
Being a FTB, last year I tried to get a joint mortgage with my husband but I was not on the electoral register at my current address and my husband was. After two applications to high street banks, we were declined, we have never had debt problems, all bills paid off etc, both on good salaries so was in a shock when we got the result. My husband was contracting at the time and some lenders do not like that so we decided to try again under my own name as my salary was enough to get the mortgage under my own name and I was declined again. They said I had a low credit score and the advisor said that I should then see a specialist mortgage broker because there was no point in trying with high street banks anymore as more searches may mean that it will leave a mark on your credit records. When banks see that searches have been carried out by other banks for mortgages and the result is declined then that may also affect the decision, so it's like catch 22.
Eventually a specialist mortgage broker managed to get me a mortgage through a non-prime mortgage companies but the deal fell through in the end.
After that fiasco, I registered for the electoral roll and this year, I have applied again and guess what, I have been offered a mortgage with a high street bank.
As you are remortgaging, it may be different as you already have a mortgage in place and bills in your name at your current address so they are able to confirm who you are and that you actually exist.
If it only takes 5 minutes to register, I would just do it, just incase, but the fact that you do have mortgage and utility bills in your name already, you probably have a better credit score.0
