Is the HE Grant also known as the Dependants Grant?!

Options
I've just received a letter from Student finance Direct with the Support notification on how much I would get from grants. On this letter it says I will be getting the HE Grant but no Dependants Grant. However I have also had a letter from the Student Loan Company, titled "Dependants Grant Acknowledgement" which say's I would receive £1000. With this letter is a small piece of paper which says.....

"LEA is responsible for assessing your eligibility for the various grant components and whether you are entitled to receive any of the grants listed below....."

And.... "The enclosed DEPENDANTS GRANT ACKNOWLEDGEMENT reflects the total amount payable to you by the student loans company on the expected payment date"

Now, the reason why I doubt all of this is because I live with my father who is on Disability benefits and I currently work. I'm not completely sure if I qualify for the Adult dependants grant but I was wondering if this Dependants Grant was it.

I just phoned the LEA people and they said the Dependants grant is the HE Grant...... Sorry I know it's confusing!! All help is appreciated!

The Dependants Grant covers Adult and/or Children who are financially dependant on the student.

The HE grant is totally separate.

There is an Adult Dependents Grant for LEA funded students. The Dependents Grant for children was abolished when Child Tax Credits were introduced. However, lots of LEAs have not changed their notifications and so still put Dependents Grant on the form and that box will often include HE Grant and Parent Learning Allowance. This tends to cause no end of problems particularly with the DWP, as Dependents Grants were taken into account as income for benefits, but Parent Learning Allowance and HE Grant are not.

There should be a breakdown somewhere on the notification which will explain how this amount is made up.l

    Hi,
My first post, so here it goes.
I got the Higher Education Grant last year and it said 'Dependants Grant' on the confirmation letter. My letter for this year is also the same. So I don't think you've got anything to worry about.

It's amazing how the only way you can find out this stuff is by this site. I even phoned my LEA and I think I'd get more sense out of my dog!
