How longs a piece of string....blurry low quality photos, portraits, sport/football, close ups/macro interchangable lenses, water proof, set a budget and work style......will let you know. How big is the proof work need to be?0

As TS says, that's really not enough info to work with.
However, to be seen as credible by a client in that sort of situation, your friend probably needs to be seen to be using a digital SLR (whether they actually ~need~ it's facilities is another matter).
In which case they could do worse than one of the entry-level cameras in the Canon EOS range. e.g the 350D or 400D, which start at around £300.0 -

Many thanks Fowar,
I will try QUIDCO, may be I will get some discount as well.
In the market place there is a huge choice, I just needed some guidelines or a product that someone has tried and used as a semi professional. Obviously ease of use and data transferability is a must.
Is E-bay any good?

Look over http://www.dpreview.com/ tons of info and a forum too. Cameras need to be looked after and not bashed about so ebay may not be for you if you dont know what you are buying / try first. Its very personnal really and just one camera does not fit all purposes. Size matters (pop one in the pocket or lug one around) as does weight and feel and brand names, ask the graduate what they feel they need. If in London theres hundreds of outlets in Tottenham Court road (top end) and in Holborn area. Try Jessops they do s/hand in store.0

If it's the cheapest it can't be the best!0
