I think the clutch is an engine out job on these cars, which would go part of the way to explaining the expense.

Even so I have difficulty accepting a charge of more than £600 or £700. £1200 is more like a gearbox replacement charge -- and even then it is on the high side.

You don't sit your foot on the clutch pedal at all do you (OP)? Most cars will put up with that for many years, but some designs do not like that at all, and clutches can give quickly under those circumstances. It's usually the thrust bearing that gives up first though under those conditions.

Actually i think £1200 is reasonable for a main dealer to replace the clutch, the clutch kit will probably have been in the region of £250 and around £150 or so for the flywheel. This leaves £800 for labour which if they took a day and a half to do the job would be about 12 hours @ £66.

If the OP can post a breakdown from their invoice i can have a look to see if things tally up.
