Home Insurance Has This Happened To Anyone Else

has anyone try to claim on there buildings insurance because tiles have blown off the roof during a storm and been told by the buildings insurance the wind wasnt strong enough on that night, apparently it has to be 54 miles an hour and for our area on that night the average wind speed was 48 miles an hour, thanks in advance

There is nothing to say that the tiles had been worked loose by previous high winds, and the winds of 48 mph on that day simply brought them down.

I claimed about 5 years ago, just set them a quote for £1200 received from builder and they sent me a cheque without question. There was no mention of wind speed.

The number they are quoting, in their words, is an average. Wind speed isn't constant so there will be gusts above (and below) that. Quite how they can categorically quote the actual wind speed in the vicinity of your roof is a mystery to me. Also the citing of a specific 54 mph to dislodge a tile seems pretty spurious to me. Which insurance company is it?

Hello reeree

I'll move your thread to the 'Insurance & Life Assurance' board.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email !!!!!!.

You would only be covered for "storm damage".
You aren't covered for general wear & tear.

This rule that they have about the wind speed is to establish where the damage was caused by a "storm" or whether it's just normal wear & tear or you havent' kept it maintained.

It sounds like you have been a bit unlucky in that you fell slightly short of the numbre in their rule.

How many tiles did you loose?
Have you got a quote?

The reason I'm asking is that if it was only a few then you might find it cheaper to pay yourself anyway rather than lose your no claims and get higher premiums next year.

You could try writing a complaint letter.
In your posistion I think I'd google for "storm damage" and see what is generally regardded as a reasonable wind speed to see if they are right or not.
