Online or Offline.

Options
Not sure if I'm on the correct section please advise. My query is relating to posting PM's to other members. To check if someone is online I've been looking at their profile which unfortunately has been showing that person offline when they've actually been online. Hope that was clear. Anyway is anybody else noticing this or is it a problem with my internet connection. Knowing someone is there is important when you are wanting a quick response and don't really want to use the thread to get that information. I'm having other problems of late which could be all related and they are: difficulty getting on to the site (used to go on first time), sending PM's( now take forever to transmit). As I said earlier has anybody else been experiencing difficulties of this nature. I'm presuming the site is getting ever more popular, could it be there is just a problem of volume at certain times.
Finally, is there a maximum number of PM's that can be stored in your in & out boxes. Since starting I have not deleted any of these messages and they run into hundreds in both boxes. Some of these messages are important to me so if there is a maximum can they be uplifted easily on to my harddrive pretty much in the same sequence and appearance as they appear on the site.
Any help on these various queries would be much appreciated.

Steve

  • Steve, you can also get your pm's sent to your email so you could keep the ones you want in there and delete the inbox on here.

Along the top of your inbox for pm's there is a preferences tab. If you click on that and tick the notify to email box.

Thanks very much Sheel & Edinburglass for your help.Sheel can you point me to your original post and I'll read what responses you got. Does it only happen to a few people this on/off business. I'm on a dial up 56k modem connection, do you think that has anything to do with it? Sheel I'm a bit Tim but dim can you just flesh out how to save as to your docs because that would be a definite solution.
Edinburglass (what do your friends call you thats shorter - Eddy?) thanks for that suggestion which would also solve the problem. Can you choose an e-mail address that is different than the one you use for registering. Some PM's need the highest security certificate ::)
Do you think the slowness of posting new PM's is because I've so many old ones?
    Thanks again

  • I think the problem of time sending pm's is intermitant, I once reported it to webby as I lost a long pm and wondered if it was the length that was causing the problem.

I am on broadband and still occasionally find it slow after hitting send. I have found it slow occasionally with the sheer amount of pm's due to the Argos thread, high security I like that.

You have to use the email you sign up for as there is no choice but you could change your email in your profile then you would only get Martin's email and your pm's to that particular address.

Thanks for that Edinburglass (I notice you didn't allow me to get too familiar by giving me your short name - story of my life :P) You have just reminded me of something else I have stopped getting the newsletter. As that problem been mentioned anywhere else. Earlier in the year it stopped for about 5 newsletters then they appeared out of the ether along with a few e-mails from friends(?) Now they appeare to have stopped completely. I should at least reregister shouldn't I. I now spend so much time on here that I haven't noticed not getting the newsletter. Probably made me too late on a few things recently. Nice obsevation on the security needs.

    Steev,

I'm moving this thread to "Technical Questions & Suggestions about this site" as it seems more relevant there.

The answer is simple. Don't trust the offline/online thing at all. We have turned off the techie stuff that does it. It was crashing the site, therefore we have to go with out it for the moment. There's an upgrade of the software due in the next six weeks that should fix it
