Rome to Amalfi Coast and where to stay

I am planning a trip to Sorrento in June and am thinking of combining this with a weekend in Rome.

The plan is to fly into Rome with Ryanair (Stanstead, Luton), stay in B&B near terminas for 2 nights and then get an express bus to Amalfi and stay in a place called Maiori for 7 nights and return to Rome for journey home.

Couple of questions,

Rome to Amalfi – is bus/train good or should we hire a car
What other areas are good to stay at for using as a base to travel around.
I want to try and do the trip on as low a budget as possible, but do know that these two destinations are expensive anyway.

Thanks for any advise
