Can't open any Word documents

I have Windows XP. Tried to attach my cv today to an email, so thought I would just have a read through of it, and it wouldn't open. So I went into >My Documents> and when into the folder with my CV. It wouldn't open. So I went into a few other folders with Word documents in them, and the Word documents would not open. This has not happened before and I desperately need to send my CV off to a job application. And I do not really want to have to type the whole thing again, and obviously, I need to sort out the problem anyway.

I emailed it to my OH at work and he could open it. He emailed it to his personal email. I went into that from my pc, and it wouldn't download, it said I had to change the association?

Help. Non-techie talk please. :o

I just did that and it wouldn't let me open it. It said Word failed to start correctly last time. Do you want to start Word in safe mode?

So I did that and it then said, Detect and Repair, and then said installation could not be completed and wants me to reinstall it? How do I do that?

  • Use open office if you are that stuck, when you get detect and repair you will have to insert the office CD.

What do you mean by use open office?

I have the cv on a cd but inserted that, and the Word document won't open.

So I am assuming I have to reinstall Word?

The only disk I can find is a System Restoration disk? I can't find the office CD. :( Is there anywhere on line I can reinstall Word?

Ok I would firstly copy the CV from CD to the My Documents folder on your PC.

Then try Open Office http://www.openoffice.org/ its basically just like MS Office but free, and NO its not on the restore disk but on an Office disk so you need to find that disk.

Unless ofcourse you are using Works then you may be able to repair Works by inserting the disc, but dont reinstall anything at all just let the repair function see if can find what its looking for.

    Hi
I don't think that you can re-install Office without the CD. Unless you download another copy and pay for it again.

aardvarkuk suggested that you try Open Office because it's a free office suite that allows you to read/write/edit doc files that are compatible with Word.

There's another word processor that will run doc files, it's free, it is abiword.
You could install this as a temporary fix until you find your Office CD.
This is the link for abiword:-http://www.abisource.com/

  • Hi
    Do this for emergency work
Open Wordpad its in Start/All Programs/Accessories

A basic Word system but without all the bells and whistles, also in there is Notepad

Or copy your CV to memory stick and use another PC or email directly as an attachment, but at least they have the gist of it.

Thanks guys. I will give WordPad a go to begin with, just to get the CV done and saved.
