Chocolate birds nests

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this so apologies if it's not.

As Christmas is now over and Easter is coming up fast, I was wondering if anyone had any receipies for chocolate birds nests/rice crispie cakes/cornflake cakes?
I've been having a look around on the internet and some say use butter and syrup and choc, some say just use choc etc etc so I was hoping that people could let me know their receipies and how good they think they are
(obv I know it's a while til Easter I just have a craving for these and was hoping to make them myself. I can also bring some into work!)

Thanks, Caroline :D

oooh my mum used to make us these - I had forgotten all about these!

Now, I don't have a recipe, just my memory, so apologies in advance.

Mum crushed a box of shredded wheat, added melted chocolate and a couple tablespoons of golden syrup. We put them into paper cases, made a hollow and added two or three cadbury's mini eggs then left to 'set'.

i always make nests at easter.

i just melt chocolate , either galaxy or cadbury's ,and mix it with shredded wheat.

i either make small ones in ckae cases , or 1 large one just on a plate.fill the small 1 with 1 or 2 mini eggs or the big one with as many as u want.

i always made these at school when i was younger and they always seem really special.

As a general rule use twice as much chocolate to cereal eg 200g/8 oz melted choc to approx 100g/4oz rice crispies, crushed shredded wheat or cornflakes. There is no need to add syrup unless you particularly want to. Shape and place a mini egg or 2 in the centre. Leave to set.

the mix you use, all depends on what type of cake you want. if made with just choc, then you get a crunchy cake. if you make it with syrup/marg/cocoa powder, then it doesnt totally set, and is more chewy (espec as the mixture is warm when you add it to the cereal so it makes it go slightly soggy)

ive always found the shredded wheat version a bit too dry. much prefer just choc and rice krispies. i never knew there was a measured recipe for this, i just melt the choc, and keep adding the krispies until there isnt any wet chocolate left. usually means i end up with loads as it goes further than you think. but then again, you can never make too many choc krispie cakes, they are a tad morish!

Ditto! I've never tried the shredded wheat one, but they'd never set with OH around
  • I'm a milk chocolate addict (but have given it up while I'm on my diet...) and can recommend Sainsburys Savers super cheapie milk chocolate. I used to think it was delicious and now I hear it calling to me as I fly past the confectionery and crisps aisle on my way to cat food. I used to think nothing but Galaxy/Cadburys/Green & Blacks would do but I tried it one day and it's really nice. It will bring down the cost of your Easter nests quite a bit.
  • Thanks so much for all your tips! I know what I'm going to be doing this weekend... I'll have an experiment and let everyone know how they turn out.

Also, I was having a look on the internet earlier and there were a couple of american receipies which used chow mein noodles raw and broken up. How odd!
