i was fortunate enough to get a pie maker on freecycle, and just wanted to share my sucess of making cheap meals with it!!

I brought one packet of froozen pastry £1.92 only used one block so 96p. one tin of princes stewing steak £1.00 and made 6 individual pies in my pie maker!

£1.96 for six beef pies =32p each!!!
I've always liked the look of the Breville Pie Makers.

I'd not thought you could use tinned meat. I'd probably go for those nice quality tins of chicken in white sauce I've been seeing for years and couldn't ever think what I could use one for.

Except .... I couldn't eat 6 pies. And as I don't have a freezer either I'd have to use both pastry amounts. So I'd end up with 12 pies!

    :)

The other things that would worry me would be:
    - can you just make 1 pie in one half of it? Or would that damage it?
    - how you re-heat the pies once they're cooked (as I could only eat one at a time)

Handy thread... I have a pie magic in the attic and this has motivated me to clean it up and eBay it !!! :rotfl:

I *think* you could cook just one, its very similar to a sandwich toaster but with a different size "hole" (deep and circular instead of bread shape!) and you can do just one toastie in a double toaster machine. I also suspect that you could reheat the pie in the machine.

Its been a while since I used it, but I must confess I never liked it. The pies were always little and I couldn't fit much filling in - so it was more like a pastry pie than a meat (etc) pie, and also I found they tasted better done as giant pies in the oven as the puff pastry cooked better. I can live without mini pies! Better luck with yours though!

Well its taken me over 14 months to get one but i have via ebay!!

I was just wondering if anyone has done a curry type of pie and if so what the recipe was?

Also, which is the best pastry to use (brought not home made, this old style way of cooking is a bit advance for me.....baby steps and all that)

    Many thanks

I made curry pies for my OH but must admit they weren't very old style, I found a tin of chicken curry in the back of the cupboard so used that, OH enjoyed them though! Now I just tend to chuck any leftovers into a pie, mince, casserole, chilli etc.

You can get frozen or chilled pastry from the supermarkets but I've found that 1 pack doesn't stretch very far. Pastry really is quite quick & simple to make, half fat to flour, rubbed into breadcrumbs & mixed with a bit of cold water to make a dough. I always buy frozen or chilled puff pastry though.

There will be a great pie maker shortage in the UK at this rate.
