I think this thread has run its course for me so I won't be making any more contributions.

Perhaps the disgruntled tenants can just carry on argueing amongst themselves......I'm already somewhere else.

Jealousy is such a negative emotion. Just as well as there are BTL landlords or where would you be living? In a cardboard box or bus shelter? If you don't like renting, buy. You could be like me, work hard, make sacrifices, put improvements on your tenanted properties ahead of your own home. You would then be taking personal responsibility, for your own wealth and financial provision for the future. The fact that you can't hack it and do as I have done, should not make you resentful or BTL LL, but grateful to them.

    Some people!

??? Many people choose to rent for a number of different reasons - perhaps they own a house elsewhere but need to rent temporarily to be nearer to work before they decided to sell up and move permanently. Again, a bizarrely assumptive collection of comments; you can't say that those who choose to rent don't work hard or earn enough to buy...there are many factors that influence a person's decision to rent.

All I've read is unsubstantiated argument; only a series of cliched, unfounded and quite prejudiced comments, that don't even address the issue to hand.

It's not discrimination, discrimination is treating someone unfairly on misplaced assumptions. Getting a CCJ shows past misdemeanours with money (if it's wrong you can get it removed) and evidence of irresponsibility with money.

That's a truism. Of course a CCJ shows a past misdemeanour with money; it's the context in which that fact is used, and the power that that fact holds in comparison with other factors that I am objecting to.

Completely agree GFB, would like to see how the system can be changed, but it would mean giving power to indivdual people to make decisions.... don't think that kind of autonomy is allowed anymore in our 'computer says no' world.

To the LL's out there who ARE strict with their properties, (No kids/smokers/pregnacy etc etc) consider this.... If you don't give leeway and show humanity to your tenants then they won't show any back to you either. Having lived once in such a property, I had NO qualms whatsoever about calling the LL on a weekend regarding a repair that needed doing that I could have easily done myself. After all, if he plays stricly by the rules then so will I.

Having afterwards lived in a property where the LL was relaxed I decorated the property at my own expense, even though a year later I moved out.. the LL was grateful, I was grateful he wasn't always on my case, happy smiles all round..... give and take I suppose..

It is a real shame we've come to this however, yet again a small minority (of tenants and LL's) have ruined it for everyone else. I agree Catblue that you should take responsibility for your own mistakes, but you should also be given a second chance also!

Yes - my current landlord is an absolute gem. He looks after me, I look after him.

A couple of years ago a letting agency charged me a £20 cleaning fee once I had vacated a property because I had not removed the mould from the window pains. The reason I had not removed the mould from the window pains was because the entire property was due to be renovated and and the process had begun, and quite clearly all the old window frames were being removed, destroyed and replaced.

I paid the agency the £20, otherwise they would not have given me a good reference, and asked them, out of interest, what the money was going towards, seeing as they were most likely not going to pay a cleaner to clean something that was going to be destroyed. They replied that the £20 had to be charged because according to their system I had not fulfilled my obligations to the property.

Common sense has been replaced with 'The System'
  • I think that the system is unfair.

One CCj and you might as well be Nick Leeson as far as experian/equifax are concerned. Hassle to get credit for what may well be an oversight on your part.

Then you get the bankrupts who keep their computer and car and in some cases house and 12 months later are not much worse off than someone with one ccj!!

Then again. I can't think of a better idea. (or rather I can't be arsed.)

Erm hmm, its the likes of damn landlords that have pushed prices up and beyond the ridiculous and the likes have me have no other bloody option but to rent.

I can't wait to see a massive house price crash and landlords get their just deserts... I am sick of them thinking they 'rule' people's lives. Like I said, scurge of society.
