Setanta

Okay, I don't know where to post this, but here goes. Subscribed for the 2 months for £1 deal for mu father(having just got him sky for Christmas), so as a little bouns took out this deal. Cancelled when required just after Christmas, no problem, not any offers or anything. Father took a phone call last night from them(mum warning him not to agree to anything) in which they offered him 3 months at £5 per month, which he took. The problem is the payment details are from my card(he dosen't have one), but they have nit ask me for authorisation, do they need this. Phone the myself the morning asking what the offer was, had some halfwit say 3 moths ending in March, in which I replied that the 3 months would mean April, which he then agreed. Where do I stand over this? I don't mind paying for another 3 months at this price, but I don't know if I need to cancel it again or what.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi I do not think they need authorisation as my son used my card when he signed up for sky,it is the same surname and address though. Is the
two months for £1 still available? my son would love it but the cannot afford £10 per month.

No not the same address, but same surname. I don't think the offer is still on.

I think if you want to make something of this, it is probably your father who is guilty of the offence. Unless the person who continued the contract with Setenta informed them to the contrary, they would rightly assume that all other details remain the same. After all they would presume that whoever they were taliking to had the authority or was the person who entered the original contract.

And, surely, your dad knew that he had not given them any financial information of his own when agreeing another 3 months at £5?

he told them to phone me and gave my number. You would think that they could tell the differnce between a "Mr" and a "Miss" regarding the details on the subscription.
  • I wouldnt worry about it too much as I subscribed to setanta too with the £1 offer back in Nov and then asked to cancel and was too offered the fiver a month deal for next 3 mnths , which I took up.

However I since received a letter sayin I am down to pay £10 a month, so rang em up and they told me to ignore that letter and a few days letter another letter arrived stating I would be payin £5 a month!

But a word of warning I gotta feeling they are gonna charge me a tenner for activiation so im looking out for that, if they do i'll be straight on the blower givin them the 'hairdryer' treatment!! :D

be careful with how much they take out of your bank account. I had 3 months free and a free digibox through TalkTalk last september, was due to pay the first £9.99 a month, they took 2 payments! Then, when you phone them up to complain, they say you have to write and claim the money back (no refund over phone!!) I cut my losses and wrote them a very very stroppy email cancelling my subscription, cancelled my debit card and told them if they tried taking money from me again then I would have them done for theft. Strangely, never heard anything from them again!!! :rotfl:

I find this appalling behaviour from setanta. I took up the 2 months for £1 offer before christmas. I called to cancel just after new year and they eventually accepted my cancellation (after offering 3 months at 5 pounds a month). I then cancelled my direct debit.

Last week I got a letter saying they had tried to take a payment but the bank had declined it - ring them up to sort it out. They also included a direct debit mandate form with the letter, probably hoping I would just fill it in.

The channels were then cut off - I think a bit early but wasnt really bothered about that. Today got another letter saying they had asked me to contact them and hadnt, please contact immediately to settle the outstanding balance. Another direct debit instruction included too. When I called (and got through surprisingly quickly) I told them I had already cancelled - they guy said the computer says I had called up on jan 4th (correct) and taken the 3 months at £5 offer!
I said I absolutely did not, so he went away for a couple of minutes and came back to say "sorry, just ignore the letters, they are just a standard letter that gets sent out when you cancel your account".

I think he may have slipped up in saying it was a standard letter - how on earth can they get away with sending this kind of letter that makes it look like you owe them money as a standard letter to cancellation, and putting a direct debit form in too. There must be something wrong in that

I have a good mind to write a complaint to somebody - but who?
  • I took the 2 months free (£1 admin) and saw the warnings from other MSE users that they would mess about when it came to cancellation.
I just cancelled my direct debit and when they rang to ask why, YES they rang me no expensive 0870's  I said i'd tried to ring them but their lines were busy ;) they thanked me for my buisness told me i'd be welcomed back anytime and i've heard nothing else....
Moral, where possible use direct debit over bank or credit cards you remain in control. Hope it helps

We also took out the £1 deal and called to cancel as we were advised in the email, they then cut us off a fortnight before they were due to, brilliant! we did phone them but couldn't get anywhere so decided not to bother and just be grateful that we got it cancelled
