BT line rental dispute

MOONRAKER
Is it just me or would i be right to object to paying the same amount in line rental fees to BT when i am not receiving the same quality of service from them. I live 2 miles from our exchange my mate lives 1 mile nearer, he can receive up to 8mbps on his internet connection speed , i can only receive 1.1mbps so why should i have to pay the same amount to receive a poor service in comparison. although we live in 2 neighboring villages we dont live in the middle of a desert or some third world country, but having said that we also dont have the option of cable. Do you think mine is a valid complaint to BT or should i just accept it?

The line rental has nothing to do with the provision of broadband. Line rental covers the maintenance of the exchange equipment for the voice side and the copper from the exchange to your house. If you read up on broadband you will find that one of the major factors for the speed available is line length from exchange to your house (in reality it is the attenuation due to the line length and condition of any joints on the way).
The line rental only covers BT's obligation to provide a voice line to your house (it should also be capable of providing 28.8kbps on a standard modem as well I believe)This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I can only get up to 6.5 mbps on my BT line but then I can have cable put in......
No one is forcing you to use ADSL to connect to the internet you can use another method i.e. satellite, dial up modem but it may not be quicker.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

That's because your exchange only supports ADSL. The one down the road has an LLU provider, such as BE, with a presence in the exchange providing ADSL2+This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I assume that you are both on ADSL2+ then? (with you being further away from the exchange)
ADSL2+ is more susceptible to line quality than ADSL and rate dropoff more marked as distance increasesThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
