Converting marg measurements to oil...

Hi gang! Does anyone out there know how to convert the marg measurement of a recipe to oil? If I need 4oz marg do I do a straight conversion & use 4oz oil?? And is there a measurement conversion table anywhere ie. cups to tablespoons to ounces to pints etc??

I'm very confused!

Thanks!

    Hiya, :)

    Conversions:
    - American cups
    - Cups and ounces
    - Quick links for conversion charts when cooking

    Those threads should help.

Ok... for the marge to oil conversion... it may not be right but this is what I do and it works... :)

Use the weight needed of your marge in grams.

Then measure your oil in a jug to be the same number of mils as you have grams.

When I substitute oil for hard fat then I use the same amount in weight.

A fluid ounce weighs the same as a solid ounce (I've just checked), hence that old saying 'A pint of water weighs a lb and a quarter' -a pint is 20 fl oz and there are 20 oz in a lb and a quarter.

I use oil in my muffins and the recipe states 3oz of butter, melted OR 3 fl oz oil ;)

So, yes use 4 fl oz of oil.

Ooooh, not heard of that one before.

But did use 'a litre of water's a pint and three quarters' when we went 'continental' in the 70s.
  • Brilliant! Thanks folks! I can bake my doggy biscuits with confidence now! (Much healthier & probably cheaper than your Pedigree "dog treats".)

This is true for water, but not universally for all liquids ;) It holds true when the density of the liquid (as with water) is 1, but not for other liquids.

Density of cooking oil is about 0.9 that of water, so for small quantities of oil, an ounce to a fluid ounce will be close enough :D

  • I am making muffins these days to freeze for packed lunches. I have dug out a recipe which uses 4oz of melted butter or110g. Wold I just weigh out the same when using oil?

  • Yes;) I use oil or butter in muffins interchangeably and it is the same weight for both.
  • Thanks very much for the quick reply Thriftlady. A lot of folk seem to go on these boards early in the morning! I get up at 5.30 during the week and usually don't come on here till lunch time but my hubby is on a training course for a couple of days so it's just me and the cats ;)
