Again MS Money is still good for PDA users but you're talking more money now.

If you are capable of using an Excel spreadsheet then you should be able to create your own.

For each account, I would use a separate sheet within the book. I would also have a summary sheet in order to track improving status month by month.

The top of each sheet can record things like account number, sort code, name of account, any special terms on withdrawal, interest payment dates, maturity etc.

    Use the columns to show:
    start date
    end dates of the period
calculate the number of days (because interest is calculated daily)
    interest rate
    amount
interest calculation (using days, rate, amount)
    cumulative interest
nett interest (multiply cumulative by 0.8)

If you are ace at spreadsheets it will be easy: if you need to think about it, it will build your spreadsheet skills!

Very easy to create your own on excel, always find the one's others have created invariably do not fit your requirements. Excel is so flexible and you can change it as you go as your needs vary.

I have started to doodle with something like this. In order to view date-specific information (like your account balances all on 1 September 2008!) you can use the '=IF()' function in a statement like

    =IF(D2>A7;IF(D2<A8;A7;0);0)

with inequalites DOWN the sheet in additional columns for each of the above*, which results in all the entries bar one being ignored (i.e. set to '0' because the inequality) then use the '=MAX()' function at a fixed location at the top of the sheet to display things (by picking out the one non zero entry in the additional columns.)

By adjusting one variable only - date - you can interrogate the table successively for each account - including expected interest up to that date (you just do an extra calculation to adjust for the number of days your test date is after the nearest non-zero interest-to-date entry)

The idea of this is then to take each account's set of figures and put them into one row on a summary sheet. The reference date (the one variable for the whole sheet) can be located on this summary sheet and you can see (as well as interest) what the balances accross all acounts could be expected to be on that date. This is motivated by it being easier to open new regular savings accounts than it is to know at what point the funding of these (allowing for maturity payouts) will exceed available resources. The ideal is to keep the money going in balanced by the money coming out.

  • Why not look at First Direct's "internet banking plus" - if still offered. This used to be free and you didn't have to be a FD client. You can load it with all your account user names with all your banks/building societies and a good few investments , even Nectar cards. The info is kept in your computer, scrambled. When you click "Update now", it shoots out requests and 10 seconds later you have all your account balances on one screen. Stuff which is not internet-accessible, you can enter manually.
Have I been helpful? The Thanks button is just here :T

I've created a comprehensive spreadsheet that allows for about 10 savings accounts, 3 credit cards, and a current account. It summarises current totals on one sheet to show your net worth, and reconciles your current account for you. If you PM me with your e-mail address, I'd be happy to send you a copy.
