i have never heard of vcr mode on a camcorder. i have a jvc mini dv and it just has the same as yours, play, off and camera. i only used mine twice with the pc and that was 3 or 4 months ago so my memory is sketchy. however i am fairly sure that if the camcorder is on and set in play mode and there is a tape in it then the computer should autmatically detect it, i think the camcorder has to be all ready and turned on before the pc is turned on, not sure though. if that does not work then i am sure in windows movie maker there is a import from camcorder function. when you click that it should then detect it and automatically rewind the tape and start transferring. my camcorder is two years old and the software that came with it is useless as it only allows for transferring to cds and not dvds, so i dont use that. i am sure windows movie maker did the job for me. my pc is pretty new though, i only got it last september and it has windows vista.

Are you opening Nero Vision 5 and selecting 'Capture Video to Hard Drive'?
