missing tax rebate

we're waiting for a tax rebate that revenue & customs say they paid to our accountant 4 months ago.The accountant said she hasn't recieved it, and that it goes via other people. Is this true? Who should i start taking it up with?

  • Hi Katej and welcome to MSE!

    Are you self-employed?
Your tax rebate is payable only to you. It would never be paid to your accountant (unless they were simply forwarding a cheque made payable to you but sent to them - unlikely)

I have never heard of a tax rebate 'going via other people'. This sounds like waffle to me. Is your accountant fully professionally qualified (F.C.A) and registered with the Institue of Chartered Accountants?

HMRC are not famed for promptness in the issuing of tax rebates. Getting them to extract the digit takes persistence and skill. Often they prefer to "keep it on account", so your future tax liability s reduced by your tax 'credit'.

Personally, I am still waiting for a sizeable agreed tax rebate since Aug 07; expect to get it next month (I hope!)
At least HMRC have to pay you interest on what they owe you!

If you authorised the payment to go to your accountant it would be sent to your accountant - there is a space on the Self Assessment Return to do this. Otherwise it would go to you.
  • But is this forum the right place for this or did you expect the refund to appear on a credit card statement?
