International Removal Costs

Options
My Mum is moving to Ireland and is trying to find the cheapest way of moving the contents of her house from England and storing until she finds a place in Ireland. She has had a range of quotes from £4k to £6k. This seems a bit expensive to me? Does anyone know of any companies that might beat these quotes?

The cheapest she has had is from Guardian Movers. Anyone got any information on this company at all and what their service is like.

Any information gratefully received.

Many thanks

My mother moved from Ireland to England eight years ago - I think she paid about £2K - this was with a very small local (England side) company - that idea might be worth a try - i.e. try a little firm.

You can save a lot by insuring the removal through Zurich Insurance and not the removers policy which (in the small print) only ususally applied if they pack for you anyway...

    Hi there

I moved from London to NI last year - I managed to fill a box van though I didn't have very much furniture (wardrobe, chest of drawers, shelving unit, bed, but about 50 boxes) and it cost me £500 (if I remember correctly...might have been £600). I used a firm which advertised in the Irish Post over there. The Irish newspapers are a good source of removal firm numbers which regularly cross the water.

I didn't go for any storage. They picked my stuff up the day before I left, and delivered it two days after I arrived in NI.

There is a firm based in Downpatrick/Killyleagh in Co.Down owned by Alan Crook (or Crooks?) which moved me from my temporary NI accommodation to my permanent residence. I was impressed by their service for that move - they mentioned about how they do house moves literally every week between England and Ireland (north & south). I can't find their number right now but if you want it send me a PM and I'll have a more detailed hunt. They have storage facilities too.

If your mum can store her stuff up north and therefore pay for it in sterling rather than Euro, then it'll probably be cheaper for her. There will be no problem about moving it across the border when she moves into her house.
