Which wireless router ?

Can somebody tell me what the best make and model wireless router to buy for our house is, if possible.
Our computer is set up downstairs and will remain where it is........House is detatched and has thick stone walls and is far enough from the road not to be hacked into I would think ( 300 metres ).
Just want to carry on using computer as normal downstairs, but want kids to be able to use their laptops anywhere in the house, or even outside in the better weather. They use them wirelessly now, in Uni, so they are already enabled
PC World recommended Belkin, but I'd rather have an unbiased view.
Thanks.
First post so be gentle !!!!!

hi, I've used both Belkin and Netgear and there was not difference between them really. I have the Netgear in my new home and its great. You can position it horizontally or vertically, which helps with space saving. It is the Range Max model, so distance is not a problem, within the house (3 storeys). Some of the newer models of both Belkin and Netgear come with security enhancements to stop hacking. Consider if in built modem is needed or not. I made the mistake of not getting an in built modem first time and had to take it back. Also consider if you want ot run wireless printing aswell. If so, it may be easier to run the same make for both?0

I'm with Onetel but pay BT for my line rental (Not cable)
My modem is an Alcatel Speedtouch 330 and the Broadband speed says it's 1.1Mbps, but I doubt it's that fast as we are probably the furthest subscribers from the exchange.
Does the main desk top computer remaine hard wired (As it's not wirelessly enabled and I don't want it to be)
Thanks for your replies !0 -

you can use the pc wired, provided it has an ethernet card (they cost about a fiver if you haven't), routers usually have 4 wired ethernet sockets.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Another vote for linksys here. By far the most stable/well featured/easy to use kit I've used.
I'd go for an adsl2+ router over an adsl router, it's a little more future proof and won't cost much if any more. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -

My son-in-law, who is an IT professional, says you can't go wrong with Belkin. I had a Netgear wireless router (supplied by AOL) and this gave me problems - he replaced it with a Belkin and everything has been OK since.0
