can you ping the computers together? open up a prompt on both computers, type ipconfig and hit enter, this will display form connection information, make a note of the ip address. should be something like 192.168.0.001, both computers will be different.
in the comand prompt, type ping and the address of the other computer, you should get a reply saying either no reply or a response time.sometimes this will force a firewall rule, do this on both computers, let us know the results of the ping.

Do you have "client for microsoft networks" and "file and printer sharing for microsoft networks" enabled for the network card on both machines? Also NetBIOS/NetBEUI (can't remeber the spelling at the moment)? It's been a while since I booted into vista (XP does everything I need) but when I did I had no problems accessing files on an XP machine and vice-versa, though I can't remember exactly which options are available on vista and what they are called.

Pinging works fine in both directions but still no sign of the XP machine in the network browser of the Vista machine.

I also installed the patch suggested by Coveredinbees!! to no avail.

Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer sharing are enabled on the XP machine's wireless network card.
  • I have lost my network again too!!!!

The icon has gone from the vista machine but I can still see the vista computer from the XP machine.

Vista is such a pile of pants I never had any trouble with XP
Nothing to see here, move along.

Thats not really that relevant to my point.
  • Well how can it be a problem with XP if XP to XP works Ok but Xp to Vista doesn't

  • You do have a LEGAL copy of XP I assume?

If there is a dodgy copy- esp without SP2 then this can occur

Because something in your XP setup could be preventing your Vista PC from accessing it. No one can say for certain what is wrong at this stage. In your first post, you said the Vista machine can not see the XP machine - that would often (but not always) indicate a problem with the XP machine not having the correct permissions set for other computers to access it.
