Hello Everyone,

I've got a 2 year old PC, a Targa Visionary AMD Athlon 2000XP.

I've downloaded Skype and want to use a headset for making calls. There's 3 sockets at the back of my PC Green for Audio Out, Blue for Audio In, and Pink for Microphone.

I've tried all sorts of microphones (tested first on my hi-fi), connecting in the different sockets and can't get a mic to work!

I've tried XP's Help And Support, it tells me to go to Control Panel>Speech and click on the "Speech Recognition" Tab. I don't see one..I only see a "Text To Speech" Tab!

Can anyone help, please!

Thanks, Louise x

On new computers you have the connections at the front or top.
You connect the mic in and the headphones to the line out.
Look under start control panel sounds speech and audio devices and look for Speech.
Make sure under volume control settings the mic isn’t muted.
Ps speech is there on the control pannel.

    Unmute Microphone.

Select Microphone as the recording source in the in your volume control / sound card utility.

Ignore this as it has nothing to do with your microphone problems.

If you are sure the microphone works on other equipment then do what the others say and check out whether your audio setings are correctly set in Control Panel.

I gave up in the end. I now have a new PC and am having the same problem!!

Do I have Alternate Microphone and Microphone Boost (in Advanced Controls For Microphone) unticked? In Volume Control Microphone Is unmuted.

In Adjust Audio Properties>Voice Recording>Recording Control the Microphone is ticked. I've tried Test Hardware in Sounds And Audio Devices Properties (trying both SigmaTel Audio and Modem #2 Line Record choices).

Tearing my hair out here! My new PC has integrated sound (STAC 97) like the last one..would that be the problem?

There is a definite noise when I plug the microphone in, but that's about it. :(

My Speakers go in the Green input in the back, in case anyone's wondering ;)

Anyone who can help me get to the bottom of the mystery please let me know! Thanks.

I'll answer my own question on here, in case it's any use to someone. I've got semi-decent speakers, and they sounded awful with the onboard sound I have on my PC.

I could never get the microphone to work either..So I bought a Creative external soundcard and my mic works! My music sounds so much better too.

(Useful for someone like me who's too scared to open their PC up).

Hope this helps someone with similar woes.

In volume control as well as having microphone unmuted, do you have line-in unmuted as well?
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.

Believe me, I tried everything. I'm stumped as to why I couldn't get my mic to work with the onboard sound.

I bought the external soundcard out of desperation! The bonus being music sounds a lot better too.
