MONEY MORAL DILEMMA: Should Tyrone take Jack's car?

  • No .... he shouldn't keep the car. Tyrone should probably suggest that he keep the car but give Tyrone some cash by way of recognising the fact that he won fair and square (although drunk) and that Tyrone was being very magnanimous.
I would have thought that about £500 should cover it. About the price of a cheap funeral in fact ... thus ensuring that Jack would have to bury Vera in an old sack and dig the grave himself.

(only kidding .... I really loved the old girl!)

    Cheers folks!

  • He should definitely take the car, although a gambling debt cannot be legally enforced. Presumably he thought he stood a fair chance of winning and would probably have taken Tyrones car, had the situation been reversed. Morally, I suppose he should not but let it be a warning, gambling wrecks lives!!

I don't think that there is any legal provision to force someone to pay the winnings over to a gambler. From my meagre knowledge on the subject, I believe that when anyone places a bet and wins, if the winnings are not forthcoming there is no legal redress available to them.

However, whatever the legal ins and outs, in the case of friends where an alcohol fuelled evening of gambling has got out of hand, I say that Tyrone should not keep Jack's car - and I would even go so far as to say that in the interest of fairness, everyone should repay any winnings from that evening, ensuring they everyone ends up with the stake he started out with.
  • No, he should rise natural instincts. Jacj would then owe him for the future
  • i think he should keep the car for a few days to teach jack a lesson, then give it back :)

  • Keep the car for a week or even a day to rub his nose in the stupid bet, worry him and put an end to future stupid bets. Next time, set a reasonable table limit.

    Totally agree with this post
  • This all depends on the circumstances leading up to the car being placed on the table. If they were spiralling upwards, exchanging several hundreds in the previous hands, therefore willingly taking large amounts of money from each other before the keys went down, hence not really being that good friends anyway, then yes, Tyrone should keep it. No doubt if Jack had won the hand he would have taken the cash that Tyrone had put in.

However, if the hands before were for small amounts and the car was thrown in as an obviously ridiculous gesture then Tyrone should return it, in the spirit of friendship.
  • The post said 'best mates'. I would hate to be some of your 'best' mates. This is a no brainer. Give him the keys AND the money back. Cannot believe that some people wouldn't do the same. A mate is a mate and you do not take advantage of him when he is drunk.
  • He shouldn't keep the car, and how about they all invest in a poker set so they can have the thrill of playing with thousands of pounds' worth of 'chips' and not lose anything.

I'd personally just go for drink/strip-poker - that way the only thing lost is a bit of dignity :)

Poker without anything at stake isn't poker. You have to mind losing, else there's no point and everyone bets regardless of cards. it'd be like playing russian roulette without a bullet.
