Hi!
To cut a long story short I let someone else use my laptop, they decided to "clean it up" and remove some old programmes and not my CD/DVD drive doesnt work!
In the device manager when i look at the drive it says "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"
Can someone help me fix it? Please!!!! I really dont want to have to resort to taking it down to those expensive people at PC World!!
Thanks!!

Have you tried re-installing drivers for it?Out of my mind. Back in 5 minutes.0
-
In all honesty am not sure how! Can figure out how to update the driver (says it doesnt need to) but not reinstall.0
-
If the first suggestion doesn't work (it may just say that it can't find one better than the one in use), go into Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager and Uninstall the CD/DVD drive.
Then reboot and it should find the "new" hardware and reinstall it.0 -
sounds like one of the uninstall engines could have corrupted the registry when removing itself, use the help section in windows to restore a backup, or even a restore point.0
-
have tried uninstalling it and when rebooted was exactly the same, as for system restore it just says that it was unable to restore the computer try another restore point.
Any more ideas?0 -
There are a couple of courses of action suggested here (under Code 19):

well i had the exact same problem and the only way around it was to reinstall xp even tho i tried to re-install any firmware i could find but it was a CD Rom upper filter handler that was corrupt and no matter what i tried i found failure, so try if you can to find more software drivers if need be or you maybe on a mission like mine
Forgot to add
What is the make and model of, Drive or PC, drive would be better.0 -
well unfortunately had to resort to reinstall windows, stupid thing!
i suppose at least it gave my laptop the "cleanup" it apparently needed in the first place!! Many thanks to everyone for the help!
