Faulty xbox360

Options
Hi all,
I have a question and wondered if anyone could shed any light on it. I bought my OH a 360 from Amazon for Christmas. He opened it (obviously) on Christmas Day, and it stopped working last Thursday. After doing the various suggestions on the MS website, and doing them all again, twice, with a none-too-bright phone tech who didn't seem to understand that I had already been through all the suggested steps, they sent a UPS label and it has just been picked up for repair.

They offered me a month's free subscription to Xbox Live Gold for the inconvenience and for being without his game system for however long it takes to repair. My OH does not play online, so this is useless to him.

A cursory google reveals that Microsoft 360's evidently have an inherent defect, as this has happened to so many people. I can't understand why Microsoft continue to sell the consoles without sorting out the problems first. They evidently know about them.

Is my OH in his rights to demand an extension on his guarantee instead of the useless Live month, or something like that, to reflect the time he has been/will be without it?

TIA.

  • Microsoft does not do that. If you still have the console then sent it back to amazon as faulty and get your money back and buy a new one hence your warrenty will go on and on. Good luck.
  • Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I don't have the console as UPS picked it up today to take it to Microsoft's service centre. I did consider returning it to Amazon as my contract is with them, but as other people have discovered, all Amazon will do (even if they accepted it after a month) is return it to MS themselves, wait for MS to return it to Amazon, then Amazon would return it back to me, making my wait even longer. So I decided it would be quicker to simply return it to MS.

I'm just annoyed that a £200 machine breaks down after three weeks use and even more annoyed to discover that MS know this is a high possibility and yet still sell the consoles. Even more angry that MS think they can get away without offering anything in the way of compensation to people who are without their goods for days or weeks when they KNOW the product is faulty.
  • Yeah if you head over the the xbox.com forums you can see alot of people complaining about it. And giving u a xbox live gold for 1 month is wrong as atm the service is horrible. Its down every other min.

I assumed the Amazon had to give you a brand new one if it is fault under the sales of goods act.

Conversley I am on my 3rd xbox within a year of buying the first. DO NOT buy an xbox online. Get it from somewhere like GAME like I did. Every time mine broke down I took it in and got a brand new one straight away. No hassle, and no sending off to MS.

But GAME will only give you it upto a year after you bought it then you can got a extra year warrenty from Microsoft :)
  • No, I didn't contact Amazon, having a friend who had this exact same scenario and was told by Amazon to either return it to MS herself, or let Amazon return it and then wait for Amazon to receive it back etc.

I do believe that if a machine suffers the infamous red ring of death, MS will repair it free of charge for up to two years AFTER the original years warranty; http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/support/systemsetup/xbox360/resources/warrantyupdate.htm however, my OH's hasn't suffered the RROD, just the game freeze. Having heard from so many people who have also suffered the game freeze, I don't doubt it's going to be long before MS extend the guarantee to cover this too.
  • Well every 3 times the system goes into repair you get a free game.

Oooh, cool, I didn't know that, thanks. I sincerely hope it doesn't come to that because he's driving me mad now after just one breakdown, but at least that's something, I suppose!
