Help. Peeling fingers.

Hi, the skin on my fingers has started peeling for no apparent reason.

They are not red or sore and I've never suffered from any skin complaints before, the skin sort of comes away like when you have a blister, then peels revealing the new pink skin underneath.

I had a virus over Christmas which gave me with a red blotchy full body rash, oral thrush, blocked sinuses, earache etc could this be anything to do with that ?

Any ideas of what may have caused this appreciated.

Thanks

    Hello nottslass

I get the same results after using certain cleaning products, if I fail to wear rubber gloves.

If this skin complaint is worrying you, you should see your GP.;)

    Regards

It could be a residual effect of the virus, or it may be a form of contact dermatitus. If you had antibiotics for your sinusitus or earache, it can be a reaction to those, too

If it persists, spreads or worries you, see your GP.

I had antibiotics that could be the mystery solved !

I've got an appointment with the Docs next week,so if it hasn't cleared up by then I'll get him to have a look.

are you having a sore tongue or blisters in the mouth too? it could be the virus - something called hand & foot (no not the animal kind)
My daughter was about three and had symptoms during a winter like a flu, fever etc. but when she got sore in the mouth and couldn't eat - the GP confirmed (after couple of visits) that it was this virus which goes away eventually and naturally. the last symptom being peeling skin from hands and feet. best to check with GP to confirm. I don't recall DD needing antibiotics though.

I did have a very sore mouth - it was too painfull to drink anything other than water,I didn't eat anything for 5 days.
  • When my son had this the dr said it was a vitamin deficiency & to eat / drink lots of citrus fruits, would tie in with not eating/drinking.

Worth giving it a try while you wait for your drs appointment to come round, if nothing else it'll help give your immune system a boost :o

  • DD had a very sore 'Strawberry Tongue' and the best thing GP gave was Difflam mouth spray - not only like an antiseptic but it numbed the pain and was very good for her sore throat. the general name i think was Hand Foot & Mouth. at first GP thought it was some kind of really rare virus called Kawasaki - which was worrying as it had side effects in later life. but after seeing her skin peeling - yes it was papery and didn't hurt, just peeled off.said it was that HFM thing. (could google it to see what comes up.) The vit deficiency is usually a riboflavin (Vit B) and Vit C def. but i don;t that would affect the skin on hands and feet.

Good luck, take care and eat well to recover ...
  • the skin on my fingers peeled off when I'd spent the weekend up to my elbows in dishwater. Though I agree it sounds like the antibiotics. If the skin underneath is clean and healthy theres nothing to worry about.

Hi, my son had these symptoms when he was 3 and was diagnosed with Scarlet Fever!!

For weeks afterwards the skin on his fingers and toes peeled. He also had a rash and strawberry tongue.

    Hope this helps.

    Best wishes

    Carol
