The short answer 'lots'. You're a cash buyer with the money ready to go. You can buy the car now, pay and walk away with it. Negotiate the best possible price you dare. Remain steely cool. Do not be afraid of awkward silence. Make your lowest offer and shut up. Let him do the talking and don't listen to his patter about how he's not making enough money, how you're taking him to the cleaners, how he can't feed his kids, how it already comes with a warranty (it has to by law from a dealer) etc. Ignore it. Aim low, stay low. Do your research and know what to aim for. If he won't budge on price ask for extra's to the be added in: car tax, mats, flaps, full tank, full service before sale, fresh MOT etc. Do not be afraid to be cocky. Dealers make money from vulnerable people paying too much because they're afraid to barter hard. Also, make sure you get given all the previous paperwork with the car it'll make it easier to sell. Its amazing how often the service history goes missing when a car goes through a dealer.........CHEAP doesn't mean ETHICAL0

There is another thing you need to consider is where you go. You will find that the large supermarkets will not budge on price. The used sales linked to main dealers like network q are more likley but only if you take the finance they will not touch the price of the car but they can drop the finance payments with a lower rate the lowest we were able to get was 6% I did get 5.7% a year ago from another place but they seem to be pretty tough on dropping their price.
If you were buying new it is completly different, the on the road prices are always choppable and your proberbly looking at easily sliceing between 1k and 2k off them by just takeing the finance very little work needed.
The best thing is to find out what car you want then find it for the best price. get an idea of what the prices are at a range of places, don't just stick to the vauxhall dealers if its a vauxhall your looking for peugeot dealers also have them. Try the supermarkets maybe just check their websites for their prices as hey can be a little far to travel.
You can get some decent deals on nearly new my dad picks his new car up on Wednesday £19025 new 9 month old £11995 the same car everywhere else I have seen it is £13-14k0 -
Many thanks for your advice guys.
I have been looking at various sites like autotrader etc and my last 2 cars have come from supermarket being Motorpoint in Burnley who seem to be the cheapest again but like you say they wont budge on price.
Will try a few local dealers round here when the time is due.
You mentioned your dad little John was that a dealer in Bolton as i noticed you are from Bolton and I work in Bolton !!0 -
As you are buying a car that will be under manufacturers warranty, there really is no need to buy from a retailer who will over charge you by an arm and a leg IMHO.
Make sure you look at cars being sold privately and consider a 2 year old or 3 year old which will be much cheaper and virtually the same in terms of condition and reliability.
And if it is under 2 & half years old and you can't find privately what you want, seriously give consideration to car auctions where I will guarantee you will find what you are looking for.0 -
My dad got his from Pentagon vauxhall in Oldham, I got mine from Willsons vauxhall on Manchester road. Willsons actually found me the car I wanted, they were brilliant. I worked it out what car I wanted I then used the glasses guide to get a value of the car at trade price I added £500 so the garrage could make a bit on the deal removed my deposit and then divided the rest by the number of months I was wanted to pay for the rest of it over. the number was then rounded down to the nearest 0 and that is what I told them I was prepared to pay.
so a 11500 car plus 500 for the garage less my 6000 deposit left me with 6000 on finance 48 months resulted in £135 per month so when the guy came back with a monthly payment of £146.01 I was more than happy to rip his hand off. It means I am paying only just over £500 over the 4 years to borrow £6000 no bank or anything else could come close. I earn more than that over 4 years with the £6000 sat in my ISA.
So know what is a reasonable price for the car you want and do your maths before you go so you know what is a good price or deal when it is offered. take a calculator if your not good with maths. The sales people will try to sell you all sorts of stuff to go with it special pait and interior protection etc you can do it yourself with spray on water proofing and jus look after the paint work with regular polishing and waking with decent wax. I get a lot of pleasure cleaning and polishing my car and makeing it look good. they will tell you no need to polish it for 2 years which is rubbish.0
