Wedding Photographs

I've no idea where to start looking for a photographer, what to look for, how much they cost????

This is my 2nd marriage, and first time around we just asked guests to take pics (didnt work out too well unfortunately) but the thought of paying out a small fortune for loads of pics that all look the same fills us with dread!

Any1 have any ideas/suggestons/recommendations please?

phone your nearest uni and ask if you can hire their best final year photography student. i lived with 2 photographers at uni and the standard is very high. in fact, one did our wedding photos a few years later and they were great. You can offer to pay them a few hundred pounds and also give them permission to use the shots for uni work if suitable. just be very clear about what style you want, who you want shots of when etc. get them to give you the shots on a disc and then arrange whatever prints etc you want yourself at a photo shop.

a professional photographer is likely to from £800 for a basic package - then lots more for extra prints etc. Average is around £1500 I think.

    Hi Boing
It is a daunting prospect i know. I have been sat on both sides of the fence i am a weding photographer and i got married 2 years ago. Firstly i wold say that if anyone has paid out a boatload for pics that all are alike then ask for your money back !!. If you really have not got hemoney to spend on a photograpger then the uni is a good idea but you have to go wit a students own style as to ask them to do things in a different style will be like pulling a fish out of waterand will be taking a huge chance as i am guessing that being students they wont have had much practise. Theother option is find someone who isjust starting thier own business as this can prove very beneficial to you, there is f coursea huge element of risk with both but it would be better than going for a student still in uni. Man people just staring out will frequently not charge you for thier services in exchange for using your prints to advertise.
Otherwise the risk minimalising option is to go for a pro who will charge more but you will havemre choice and will be more likely to findsomeone who can fit in with tyou preferred style. You can find very ood photographers fom as little at £350 and it is often not the case that you get what you pay forwith phoography as some charge£1000+ justbecause thier neighbour does not because they are truly worth it !
If you need any more advice then please pm me

  • Not sure if this will be of any help but someone posted this link on another thread a while ago

It might at least give you an idea of who is available in your area.

We started off with a quote for about £800 but have now found someone who will do the photos on a copyright free DVD for £360 but I don't live in your area unfortunately.

If you're getting married during the week or out of season you may be able to negotiate a discount.
Officially a non-smoker but still rounder than recommended :p
  • I m a pro photographer based in cheshire, and you can get advice from our professional bodies such as the MPA or Swipp both have website, decide on a budget then pick a few photographers who are in that price bracket. Take a good look at there work and ask to see several weddings not just one or two. look at the composition and use of light in there work look past the pretty bits of the wedding look how sharp the pictures are. My basic package is £360 and that would give you a disk copyright free disk for you take and have prints done at fraction of the price that photographers would charge. And if you want to add an album we would sort that out as a extra cost after the wedding. There are alot of photographers starting to do this. I would however stick with someone backed by a pro body such as those mentioned already, we have to prove to the body are skills and take out insurance to cover any disasters such as someone tripping over ones equipment.

    Hi avid,
    have Pm'd you, thanks!:D

We saw a photographer who produced books rather than albums, was a nice idea as the photos can basically stretch over 2 A4 pages at a time.

Does anyonw have experience of if we could do this ourselves if we got a basic copyright free wedding photographer to provide a dvd?

    Thanks
  • yes this company will do them from you own pictures
