  • I honestly don't think she would do it again, but is there anything I can do to change so that if she DID attempt to, it wouldn't work? She knows my address, D.O.B, name etc, and isn't that normally what most forms want?

  • If she did try and do it again, if she is using your address then surely any statements would come to you so you would know?

(I know previously you said you lived there so that is where this problem came from)

  • Ah okay, so theres no way she could fill out the forms and say I lived there still? And still be accepted.

  • I'm not 100% sure but i think that when you apply for credit (store cards etc.) they check that you actually live at the address stated using the council tax register (i know this isn't the right name but I'm having a ditsy moment!! ). So make sure you are registered at your address not your mums and theoretically she won't be able to do this again.

  • Got a quick question, when I call them tomorrow, is it possible in any way I can get them to reduce the amount , its currently at £340 and my mum tells me £110 is what she spent on it and the rest is basically interest. Would they decrease the interest at all if i offered to pay it all at once?

  • they might do, although I think they might do that for really big amounts? not sure how they would see 340? I would try for the 110, then say you'll pay 170 (thats half right my maths sucks) heck they can only say no give a try.

just another suggestion, could you get a credit check and make sure your mum hasn't done this with other credit cards? just so you know for sure.

    good luck xx
    Nevertheless she persisted.
  • When did she take the card out?

£340 seems an awful lot of intrest for £110 debt.

    Thats more than 2/3

If you really don't want to go down the road of reporting her for fraud, phone them and tell them that you moved house, the new owners weren't passing on mail and TBH you forgot all about it.

Say that you are willing to pay the £110 right there and then but is there anyway you could pay a percentage of the intrest and close the card down.

If you are nice enought to them i.e. don't lose the head, then they should be ok with you.

i had a customer who was registered with http://www.cifas.org.uk/default.asp?edit_id=565-85
it meant as soon as they were credit checked for something it flagged up that they should do extra checks/ask for extra proof so should mean that she couldnt get any more credit in your name.
ring them to see if this can be done for credit checks in your name at your address and your mums address both
    Yes Your Dukeiness :D
  • She took the card out about 3years ago I think, made minimum payments for however long she could be bothered I imagine, then started binning the letters.
I'll call and say the post wasn't forwarded, forgot etc, and see if they can reduce the amount a bit.

Thanks for all the advice guys :)

its deferred interest (ie backdated to the date of purchase) at a rate of around 27%. doesnt take long for that to add up, especially when you add compounding into the equation
