Changing my mone into euros

I am a complete holiday novice and I am confused about changing my spending money into euros.

I have a visa electron card that I get my tax credits paid into, someone told me I should just take all my money and put it into the bank before I go and draw it out the other end but I would rather have some at least with me.

Should I maybe do half and half?

I'm always against relying on debit (or credit) cards abroad.
What if it gets swallowed in the machine?

I usually take cash now & lock it in the safety deposit box. You can take travellers cheques (very safe but you pay for that safety)
