Petrol or diesel? Help please!

Diesel all the way. Manufacturers quoted figures for diesel are always closer in real life than petrol eqivalents. Around town diesel is miles better mpg than motorway comparisons are, % wise compared to petrol.0

Hi Am buying a Renault Megane hatchback (c/o Tesco clubcard vouchers!!) but cannot work out whether to get petrol or diesel.
Diesel car cost 8k, petrol car cost 6,800k.
Diesel 60mpg Petrol 40mpg
Use 1000k miles per month.
Diesel costs 105 p litre Petrol 100p p litre (ish)
Road tax diesel £35 per year petrol car £140 per year
Diesel insurance group 4 petrol car insurance group 5.
Do I pay £1200 more to now and get the diesel savings in the long run?
Will keep car for about 5 years.
If I'm posting in the wrong place please let me know!!
Thanks!!
I assume you don't really mean 1000k miles per month? High mileage would warrant diesel, but it's a Renault - it'll likely be broken down too much for you to do enough mileage for it to be worth it!
Diesel does produce less CO2 per mile though, hence the lower car tax0 -
I read somewhere that you need to be doing over 15,000 a year for diesel to work out better value .I've got a 2.5 petrol car but i use a company van during the week so it doesnt hurt me in the wallet .0

Just a quick point for anyone considering diesel.
We changed my wifes car last October and were set on a Saab 9-3 diesel but were talked out of it by the Saab main dealer. Their explanation was that as my wife only drives small distances during the week (work 1.5 miles / shops 1 mile ect) then the filters would become blocked and these were £300+ per time. The petrol version that they recomended was quite a bit cheaper so I can see no reason for them not to have been telling the truth.
The fact of diesels having faster excelleration now is a little bit of a myth, they will get away quicker from a start but when you are changing gear at 4.5k a well driven petrol engine will just fly past.
P.S.
Nothing wrong with Renault, I had a clio for 3 years, sold it to a friend and she has had it for 5 years now, only repair cost were 1 breakdown costing around £100, not bad for an 8 year old car. (I have spent lots more on my Celica  :rotfl: )Totally Debt Free & Mortgage Free Semi retired and happy0 -
lol Renault - either love them or hate them ey ?! My view is if you get a good one, keep hold of it, because i have heard you can get dodgy ones. Ours has always been good to us0

Thanks :j so much for the discussion and replies and yes of course I meant 1k per month!!:o
Diesel at the minute and have had 2 scenics before and had no problems at all.
It will be a year or so old from car supermarket.
Thanks and any other opinions most welcome!!:T0 -
I had a 1.9 diesel Scenic which was FAB. Unfortunately cambelt blew and we had to buy a new one. Got a petrol 2l this time and it's MUCH heavier on fuel than the diesel was!
BTW mine rarely broke down - if we had changed the cambelt a little earlier then it would still be running fine. It was 10 years old too!0
