Petrol or diesel? Help please!

Hi Am buying a Renault Megane hatchback (c/o Tesco clubcard vouchers!!) but cannot work out whether to get petrol or diesel.

Diesel car cost 8k, petrol car cost 6,800k.
Diesel 60mpg Petrol 40mpg
Use 1000k miles per month.
Diesel costs 105 p litre Petrol 100p p litre (ish)
Road tax diesel £35 per year petrol car £140 per year
Diesel insurance group 4 petrol car insurance group 5.

Do I pay £1200 more to now and get the diesel savings in the long run?
Will keep car for about 5 years.

Borderline. Your mileage isn't that high to swing it to a total diesel option. Plus the figures given by the manufacturer aren't realistic. Test drive a diesel to see if you prefer it to a petrol version.

But resale value on Renaults is absolute rubbish.
Bought a new Megane 1.9 Diesel top of the range with extras, £16500 and after 2 1/2 years and 20000 miles P/E at same Renault dealership, £8000 :eek:
Same value Audi would have been £12000. So I bought a new Audi :j

depends if you buy 2nd hand or not - ours was 2nd hand and has kept its value pretty well (Laguna sports tourer). But it was a much better age than any other brands in the same price range TBH so i get your point

We have been in the same predicament. Hubby wanted a diesel as its cheaper to run. We have looked at a few cars and have decided that as we are only looking to keep the car 4 yrs (ish) maximum and only expect to do 8-10,000 miles a yr, the money we pay extra now, we wouldn't get that back. Or rather in the 4 yrs we wouldn't save in running costs the extra money that a diesel costs in the first place.

Hi i bought a 2nd hand focus TDI after havin a petrol astra for a few years. I love the focus. surprisingly quiet. I spend less per month and frequent the forecourt less, however the price of deisel means it isn't as large a saving as i would have liked, but i'm in for the long haul too- looking to keep for a few yrs.

I had a 2.0 petrol Renault, nice to drive but I found the deisel underpowered and pretty noisy.

You sure you want a Renault, resale values are pretty dire.

Petrol all the way, Diesel is a filthy fuel with a tractor like death rattle on tickover, would never touch it, have only driven 1 diesel that was any good and that was a BMW costing 35K :eek:

£1200 (+£105/yr) is a LOT of petrol... you probably don't do enough mileage to justify the extra on a diesel... as others have said take the manufacturers MPG figures with a large dose of salt!

I assume he means 1K or 1,000 miles a month

I have a diesel Vectra (1.9), and since buying it, I have driven around 10,000 miles, my on-board computer says I am averaging 58 miles per gallon throughout those miles. I doubt I would have got that return on a petrol car.
