Still no joy,cannot copy the files from the windows cd if i did boot from another hard drive would i be able to copy photos from the problem drive?

Is the CD that you are using a Genuine XP CD or a Naff Restore CD as they are pretty useless.

But only if the drive isnt completely shot, and you would have to load an OS on another drive and set the old drive as slave or insert into a caddy, better still use an ubuntu live CD.

I have a product recovery cd-rom.
what i will try is putting back the original hard drive and copying what i can from the problem drive.

ps where is the best place to get anther ide cable with multiple connectors?

Maplins wil be the quickest way but not the cheapest.

Just borrow an XP CD that should sort it.
