Tax Credit success!!!!!

I received 3 letters through the post this morning from the TC office saying that overpayments arose on our claim in previous years are to be ignored, and we do not have to pay them of because they were down to mistakes they made.

All in all, this amounts to more than £3000 to be wiped off :T

AND, we are getting refunded any money we have already had deducted from TC in payment of these wrong overpayments :j

I'm thrilled :D

  • We're in the same boat, can't seem to make the numbers add up, but at least we don't have to pay back what they've overpaid us.

    Looks like it's around £5k.

Still won't be voting for the incompetent ******** though.
Just for one moment, thought I'd found my way.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
My tax credit payment was fine for the year to 05, as I changed jobs during the year I am now just over the threshold and i have been overpaid for this year by £67 .... which they want paid back in another year!

However as I was paid for two months for one months work ( line time from old job plus hours worked in new job) I think that will put me back under limit !!!!! Of course I could get a wage increase then I 'll be laughing!!

No wonder its difficult to keep track of!

dunno, I only queried one aspect of it and as a result they must have looked into it all and decided they c*cked up the lot. I'm not moaning though :D

    that's great :-)
i am paying back my overpayment, even though it was their fault because they set both our incomes to zero for no reason it was obvious that they were overpaying us, no way we could have thought that money was ours to spend.

my sister kept her 3 grand overpayment, she got a new kitchen!

well i think this is where were lucky. We didn't know the overpayment had occured. I was a single claimant with the WFTC system and completed the WTC/CTC forms in October 2002. In march 03 I moved in with partner and we put in a joint claim, to override the single claim which had not yet been pad out on because it didn't start til April.

We were going to have a very low income, so were entitled to full. The payments started rolling in in April and we just assumed it was our award. We were phoned in July and told there had been a mix up and that we were recieving my single claim. They immediately changed the payments to put us on the couple payments.

It wasn't until August that the award notice came, in respect of both claims, so this is where we managed to argue that we could not have been expected to know we were getting the wrong amount. Not only that, but there was little difference between what my single claim with chidcare expenses and what our joint claim was worth, so I also argued that we would have been entitled to more or less the same amount had we been receiving the joint claim since the April.

They have now backed down and agreed it was their mistake which led to the overpayment and we have had ALL overpayments scrapped because it had a knock on effect then to our joint claim, and subsequent year's claim with overpayments deducted.

  • Lucky thing, they have been taking over £248 a month from my TC even though my full claim was only £279 a month! They admitted it was they mistake but still making us pay it back!

loobyloo i'm really glad you got to keep the money then, if you genuinely thought you were getting the right amount then you will have spent it, so paying it back would have been really difficult! in my case i knew the extra money was wrong and put it into a high interest account because they wouldn't take it back. they've stopped paying me now, i get nothing for a few years until it's all been repaid. that's fair enough, in cases like mine they should be taking the money back but in cases like yours where they've led you to believe you're getting the correct amount then you should get it written off - glad it worked out for you :D

yeah this happened to my in laws with theirs. They owed £500 total and had £250 a month knocked off for about 5-6 months!!! They appealed, but they still kept taking the money. It left them in a real mess. Its disgusting really.

Sorry its not quite worked out for you :-(
