A friend of mine bought a new computer about a year ago with windows xp on it. He has updated windows regularly, but now it won't let him download any updates.
He's is not aware of having purchase a 12 month licence etc for windows.
I read somewhere that windows had beefed up there security to stop non-legit copies of windows from obtaining updates, but I can't locate it now.
Can anybody shed any advice on this, as my friend is not best pleased having paid for an OS that is now restricted.
cheers

Microsoft threatened to do this several years ago, but were eventually persuaded that having millions of virus-infected illegitimate Windows copies out there was not the way forward.
Hence you don't have to pass (or even accept) the WGA stuff in order to get security updates and patches. You do, however, if you want Office and other non-security updates.
There seem to be quite a few ways in which Windows Update can fail - best bet is for your friend to Google for "windows update won't work" and then work their way through the many how-to's that are out there.0 -
If your friend did a recent has done a recent reinstall or repair in windows this can cause probs with up updates. heres a fix for that
