Halifax student account

Options
:confused:Took DD to the Halifax to open a student account but the computer said no! She will have £500 a month and be living with us for at least the next 6mths. I have a current account with them and it`s in credit. So much for the best account for students.

What was their reason for saying no?

Is your DD on the electoral roll at your address?

Is she a full time student?

You need to find out why they have said no first really.

We need a bit more information before we can agree or disagree with you

I got turned down for an account too, even though I had a basic bank account with them for years before returning to uni.

Perhaps your DD doesn't have any credit history yet? Seems silly, as if she's a student she's probably only 18 or 19, but some banks refuse to give cards or overdrafts to people who don't have any details on Experian. In my old CS job for a phone service provider, we turned down lots of people for this reason.

I got a student account without a credit record, but they don't have to give you an overdraft - there are other benefits to a student account apart from allowing you to get into debt!

It might have been the income which put them off - the banks only make money on student accounts by giving interest free overdrafts which then expire once the course is finished leaving the student with thousands of pounsd of no-longer-free overdraft to clear and be charged on for a few years, or take out a loan to cover it. In each case the bank recoups the money it costs them to allow other advantages and benefits. However, if you never use the overdraft, then you never pay the bank anything, so maybe this is why your daughter was turned down.
She could try at another bank and not mention the income - see if that works!

My son got a student account with the Halifax despite having no credit record and refusing the overdraft facility.

Does she have anything on credit which she "forgot" to pay?

dont quite know how you can presume those 3 things.
  • She doesn`t have any credit good or bad.
She is on electoral role and voted in may.
She had the letter from uni offering the place and I think 40 weeks a year 9 til 5 is pretty much full time. She is a student nurse.

The computer gave no reason but she now has an account with Nat West....Halifax loss

Don't take it personally, credit is being tightened up (and rightly so) a lot of people ith good credit track records are being turned down for the latest products with no reason given. That is just a fact of life these days .. you can request any product you want but you have no 'right' to be granted it.

Also don't take an attitude of 'their loss' otherwise you will be the loser .. as Martin would say you gotta work the system to your benefit even if it is somebody that has let you down in the past.
