8 Mbps .. why does wireless say 54.0 Mbps

im with BT , ok so im probably getting about 5 Mbps broadband , so why does my other laptop report 54.0 Mbps (its wireless)

That's your wireless speed (54 Mbps) to the router not your internet speed.

True, also well within the wireless capabilities of your wireless connection (54Mb) however, you wont get that, thats the theoretical max. speed in an open field.

but the max you can get is 8 Mbps ... so why report 54.0 Mbps

That is because the router can work up to 54.0Mbps. As the routers can also be used say to transfer files between your own PCs, that in theory really could be done at 54.0Mbps, it is just that your connection to the internet is limited to 8Mbps by your ISP.

If at any time you ended up getting internet in excess of 54.0Mbps, somehow, you would need to buy a better router in order to gain full effect of that upgrade. However, this will be some time away, though I do believe Virgin are on about 50Mbps cable broadband possibly, but when and how I don't know!

PC<---cat5 cable-100Mb--->router<---8Mb--->BTinternet

Cable hard wired (cat5) very good, but still throttled back by the ISP (technology) to yor 5Mb connection download link. However all other pc's connected to each other will operate at 100Mb on a CABLED network, OR FIXED and limited to the basic of just 10Mb wirelessly PC to PC.

ah, so i get 5Mbps through to my house and 54 Mbps max through from my router to my pc,

by throttled back you mean the max i can get is 5Mbps because of bt

but if i had two pc's sharing data then the transfer rate would be 100Mbps on cat5

The speedo on my car says 160mph, fat chance.
If you have 2 wireless computers with 54mbps your file transfers will be about that speed, I think in a few years when city wide wireless internet is the norm we will get pretty fast downloads, but I think I'll be pushing up daisies by then.
