Looking for a camcorder

Hi
My partner and I are looking for a camcorder for holidays, birthdays, parties - so nothing short of the normal use for it
However to be honest I know sod all about camcorders - have never used one and never really looked at getting one in the past....
I looked on ebuyer today and there seems to be a whole range of different ones with weird and fancy gadgets and functons which I have never heard of
Can anyone clear the fog and recommend one?
